Jan Kotěra

Jan Kotěra (1871-1923) was an important Czech architect, who also worked in the association of visual artists Mánes and as the editor of the magazine Volné směry. In 1902, Kotěra designed a wooden pavilion for the Mánes Association at the foot of the Kinský Garden below Petřín, intended for the exhibition of sculptures by August Rodina. The building was intended only for this exhibition, but it served its purpose until 1917 when it was removed. Jan Kotěra built a villa for Stanislav Sucharda, including the 1904-1906 studio. He transformed the strict style of his buildings to a monumental scale in the building of the Municipal Museum in Hradec Králové from 1909-13. The building seemed to him like a composition of volumes freely developed into space according to given functions. The modern floor plan does not lack a dome, which rises above the entrance guarded by two goddesses such as Suchard. The frame of the entrance part then strikingly resembles a Romanesque concession portal with a severed arch.
